Gynecomastia is a Greek word, which means development of female-type breasts on a male. Males have breast tissue as well. The difference is that it is rudimentary. That means it never develops because males lack the appropriate hormones that stimulate breast growth. In some cases though breast development occurs in males for reasons that are not clear. This condition is termed idiopathic gynecomastia. Idiopathic refers to the fact there is no known cause for breast development in males. This is contrast to some known causes of gynecomastia such as marijuana usage, liver diseases and certain medications. I conduct a very thorough work up therefore to the males that I treat with gynecomastia. This condition appears typically in adolescence and has profound psychological effects. Therefore it is imperative that it gets treated as soon as possible. Treatment is different from person to person based on the degree of gynecomastia, breast tissue density and skin laxity.
This patient had a one time treatment of his gynecomastia by me with liposuction. The result that you see is only after one week following treatment.
